| Shelter
was built by Germans in 1941 as an anti-aircraft shelter for civilians.
Shelter is 5 floor deep. From the highest exit
on Plac Zawiszy Czarnego (Zawiszy Czarnego square) to the floor
of the lowest level there are 16 meters. Its ferro-concrete walls
are 3 meters thick, ceiling is 2,80 meters thick. The longest corridor
is about 100 meters long. Total surface of shelter is 2,500 m2 and
1,900 m2 useful surface.
Soon after having been taken by Poles, the shelter
was adapted into a fallout shelter. Till early 90's trainings of
Civil Defense took place here.
The shelter is still full of mysteries - nobody knows exactly where the walled-up corridors lead to.
This is a biggest civil shelter in Poland from WW2 period.
Szczecin's lovers from the company Rent & Tourism Center who
are fascinated by dungeons of Gryphon City invested much effort
into making this magical place accessible for Szczecin's citizens.
Today, thanks to their hard work and help from friends and other
good people the shelter is wide open for inhabitants and tourists.
Opening
the shelter is not the end of our job - we're planning to make this
place start to live its own life so that it is a place of thought
exchange, art and culture.
We're planning to open new chambers to make it even more interesting.
We warmly invite everybody to Underground Szczecin!
